Case Study: London Borough of Basildon - Future Sounds

The 18 month Youth Music-funded Future Sounds project, developed and delivered in conjunction with Positive Futures, began in March with a launch event at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon. This was followed by accredited Music Production and Singing & Songwriting courses over the Easter holidays, and a Live Sound Engineering course during the summer term. All courses were well attended, and received positive feedback:

“I feel like I have found myself, been understood and gained a lot of knowledge. I have been doing what I love for four days. I am so sad to see it end :-(“

“I have made new friends, new skills and have a better understanding of other people’s voices.”

Learners on the Live Sound Engineering course were invited to assist on the Boom Room’s live stage at the Bassfest on the 4th and 5th July 2009, as part of their final assessment. Students performed so well that most have been offered further paid employment as sound engineers for The Boom Room, which promotes musical talent amongst young people in Basildon.

“They should feel very proud of themselves as I have seen adults get in a flap and not do a good a job as they did, so congratulations and well done for a fantastic sound engineering course.” – Deb, The Boom Room.

“The crowds don't appreciate how much work goes into putting that stage together and the constant attention required during all those performances to keep it smooth. The band had a great time and commented on the excellent sound levelling. We don't normally start selling CDs after the first song!” – Ian Challis, Band Manager, GLITCH In The System.

The next phase of Future Sounds was a Workshops Skills course for 16 – 18 year olds in August 2009. Two exceptional students from this course were even offered paid employment as trainee assistant tutors for Point Blank on the following Future Sounds Singing/MC Skills course in September.

Two more courses will follow in 2010. For further information or to sign up for any of the courses, please contact Positive Futures on 01268 465 447 or visit www.myspace.com/theboomroombasildon
